Hydrostatic Pressure Testing Requirements for Water Distribution System Installation or Replacement

January 2020    Tim French, Technical Sales Manager, Amherst New Hampshire

Contractors are required to either test or hire certified testing companies to perform pressure and leakage testing in accordance with the applicable AWWA Standards and Specifications. The testing company is required to submit certified leakage testing results to the system operators or owners for each section of water main tested. All water mains, appurtenances, and hydrant branches must be pressurized by the testing company to a minimum of 1½ times the normal working pressure of the water main or 150 psi, whichever is greater, for at least 2 hours. If a section of water main piping fails pressure and leakage testing, the contractor is required to repair or replace the defective section of pipe, fitting, valve, or joint. The testing company shall then conduct additional testing until satisfactory test results are achieved.

Monarch Instrument’s Pressure Data Loggers are the ideal tool for measuring, recording pressure, and generating reports for these tests. Our reliable, accurate, field-proven instruments are the Professionals Choice for this requirement.

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) provides information in both video and as printed manuals on Hydrostatic Testing and best practices including the following materials:

• Concrete Pressure Pipe (M9),
• Steel Pipe (M11),
• PVC Pipe (M23),
• Ductile-Iron Pipe (M41), and
• PE Pipe (M55

Demonstrating best practices for:

• Flushing and cleaning new pipe prior to testing
• Bleeding trapped air
• Bracing and thrust blocking
• Filling and pressuring pipelines
• Test pressures and durations for various pipe types
• Allowable leakage, if any
• Measuring makeup water
• Variations in test procedures for each type of pipe
• Disinfecting pipes prior to putting into service
• Record keeping

Is it faulty gas supply or equipment malfunction?

February 2020    Tim French, Technical Sales Manager, Amherst New Hampshire
Have an oven, furnace or boiler that is not performing properly? Or do you have a customer who is experiencing these conditions? The equipment manufacturer or installer is often blamed for shut downs and poor performance when in fact, gas supply lines are way too often to blame.

 THE SOLUTION?
The Monarch Instrument Track-It™ Pressure Data Logger with Display will provide data that will prove whether the gas supply pressure was sufficient or not. This will allow you to determine whether you need to fix the supply problem or repair the equipment itself.
This battery powered Instrument can log in inches of water column or any engineering unit you prefer. It has resolution of 0.0083 inches of water column and accuracy of 0.25%.
The log interval is user selectable from 10 times per second up to once per day. 10 times per second will allow a log file to contain almost 4 hours of data before the memory is full. A log interval of twice a second will allow 18.5 hours, 2 seconds will allow 3 days, 10 seconds will allow 15 days, etc. The logger can be set to stop recording when full (130,000 samples) or record continuously by overwriting the oldest data. Also, a low pressure value can start the log at any of the predetermined rates.

Ordering any of the Track-It™ Pressure Logger Models provides you with everything you need…Battery, Software, USB Cable, and free Android App. Using an Android device, the Track-It™ Transport App allows you to extract and send data to a PC for viewing and generating reports. NIST Certificates are available as an option.

Track-it rfid data loggers used in transportation of human organs for transplant.>

February 2020    Tim French, Technical Sales Manager, Amherst New Hampshire
A specialty transportation service company required a temperature data logger that was accurate, able to withstand exposure to ice, water and other contaminants and could quickly provide the temperature history of the inside of a container that carries human organs for transplant.
Maintaining the proper temperature of human organs during transplant is absolutely critical, as any deviation can render an organ unusable so, a record of the temperature must be kept to prove that the package was at the proper temperature while in transit. The courier needs to be able to provide the data in its entirety at the moment the package is delivered.

Monarch Instrument’s Track-It™ RFID Temperature loggers were chosen to meet the critical requirements of this application for several reasons:

  1. They are compact in size
  2. They are able to withstand exposure to water, ice and other contaminants
  3. They are accurate (± 0.5°C)
  4. They are inexpensive (only $49.00)
  5. They are reusable and have replaceable batteries
  6. Data is transferred wirelessly using any compatible Android device with NFC communications.
  7. The Android app summary screen immediately notifies the user if there were any temperature excursions during the transport period.
The data file can be permanently archived for review or printout using free Track-It™ PC software

If you’re looking for a data logger you can trust with your critical data, look no further than Monarch’s Track-It™ RFID temperature data loggers (Temperature/Humidity logger also available).
